Backyard Dream Becomes Reality on the Eastern Shore
Capitol Hardscapes was awarded this job as a result of our ability to present the homeowner with solutions to several substantial challenges. The backyard originally had an existing pool that was approximately 20' x 40' which we in-filled and reduced to approximately 12' x 20'. The pool was flanked by an existing 6" concrete slab that did not have the correct pitch in order to provide for adequate drainage (it drained toward the house). Since the pool and its deck were constructed many years ago when the critical area regulations were less stringent, the existing concrete had to stay in place or the owner would have been required to comply with new permitting and mitigation issues which would have led to a substantial reduction in the overall square footage allowed for the project. All other contractors who were asked to bid on the project expressed no interest in working over the existing concrete. Capitol Hardscapes used the expertise of a local structural engineer to find a way to make this project a reality. We used CS&T brand pavers and installed them in a random pattern consisting of 5 sizes and three colors. The wall system is also from CS&T and is a modular pattern consisting of the same three colors. The walls are a combination of single and double faced wall. A custom kitchen, bar, and seat walls were constructed from the same wall product. The fireplace is a gas insert surrounded with Owens Corning Mojave Country Ledgestone. The pier caps and fireplace topper are natural Garnet Stone custom cut and rock faced to give a rustic look. The existing rectangular shape of the pool deck was masked with free-form curves and two raised areas to provide separate functional spaces while taking advantage of the maximum usable space. Accent lighting was also added to provide safety and ambiance.
